Energy and Environment

The specialisation that connects physics to policy. In the third year of the Undergraduate Study in Mechanical Engineering at FSB, you move from core engineering fundamentals into the systems that power a city, thermal power plants, turbomachinery, renewables and the environment around them.

You start where engineering starts, with Thermodynamics and Fluid Flow, and end able to walk through a power plant and understand every system in it. Practicum courses put you in the lab with real equipment early, and a broad elective pool lets your own interests shape the semester. It is the direct route into the graduate programme in Energy Systems.

01 From energy fundamentals to real systems

Introduction to Energy Engineering gives you the whole picture: energy sources, conversions, economics and policy. By semester 6 you are analysing renewable power generation and the environmental impact of energy systems.

Laboratory Work puts you in the faculty laboratories with real equipment across four practical exercises, and Programming Skills in Energy Engineering teaches you to solve energy problems in Python and MATLAB.

03 Electives that shape your direction

Alongside the wider faculty pool, PowerLab offers electives in energy economics and planning, renewable power generation, programming for energy engineering, and energy and environment, so your own interests shape how the final year looks.

04 The direct route to graduate studies

This specialisation is the natural entry point to the Smart Energy Systems graduate programme at PowerLab. Students who know both the hardware and the modelling, that's the combination the lab is built on.
